From One Mama to Another-Meet Kate
Everyone say hi to Kate, a hip Mama Bird, creator of Mom Cards, party thrower extraordinaire & my best friend since childhood (we met when we were 10 years old and have been forever friends-lucky me!) Kate's a mother to 1.5 bebe birds (#2 will arrive this fall) a wife, a full time working mom and she just finished grad school last spring. In addition, Kate's the master mind behind one of my favorite blogs, Studio LIME Design. Need to catch your breathe?!?! She is truly a creative individual. What I admire most is how she manages to do it all with such grace. "I have my struggles" she will remind me... but knowing her and reading her blog I find inspiration-the fetes she hosts and the family dinner recipes she shares. On busy nights she manages to whip together a nice meal for her family. While, I struggle to wrangle my almost 2 year old away from the stove eventually opting to simply toss Chick' patties into oven yet again for a hearty meal : /.
We caught up with Kate to learn more about her blogging, her "partying" and life as a mama...
Bebe Birds: BF, tell me about Studio LIME Design.
Kate: Studio LIME Design is a blog I started on a whim a few years ago. Originally, I had intended on only sharing the party invitations, baby announcements, and other social stationary I was creating for fun and for friends and family. It wasn't long before I caught "blog fever" and realized that I just enjoyed blogging, period. At that point, Studio LIME Design became a hodge podge of my favorite things: invitations/announcements, home decorating, crafts, party planning, recipes and personal interests/posts.
BB: What are some of your favorite topics to cover?
K: My favorite topic to cover is party planning. Although time is scarce I love nothing more than planning a good bash. I so enjoy throwing myself into the details and letting my creative juices run wild.
Surprisingly, the recipes I post have gotten a lot of attention. I like to cook and most importantly love the feeling of being able to pull a healthy meal together for my family each night, but I like practicality and don't have hours on end to spend in the kitchen. I started sharing some of my simplest dinners and a lot of my friends have tried them. Hey, us working gals/moms have to stick together and if I make something tasty and it doesn't take all night I'm happy to share.
BB: As you know I'm a proud owner of the Mom Cards and have gotten a ton of compliments on them from other city mama birds. Can you tell me your inspiration for creating the cards?
K: I can't take the credit for creating Mom Cards--I'm sure they existed before I made my first batch. When I was pregnant with my first baby, I was soooooo excited and wanted to be prepared for my first time off as a teacher. In the new mom haze I knew I was not going to have time to root through my bag for a pen and paper to exchange names and numbers with other mothers, so I created the Mom Cards as a way to easily and quickly give someone my information for a future play date.
I think they are especially useful for the city mom who is on the go, in and out of different city parks and meeting different moms here and there, etc. I'm hoping to add a few different versions of them for a possible future Etsy shop.
BB: Etsy Shop? Where do you see the future of Studio LIME Design going?
K: Well, my blog and business have definitely slowed down since the birth of my son. I'm finding it harder and harder to keep up with the blog posts and fulfill design requests. My hope is to stay at home with my children for the next few years {or forever if we can swing it} at that point, I'd love to open an Etsy shop and give my little business a real try.
BB: You have such a flare for entertaining. Can you share a favorite event you hosted and what it was that made it your favorite?
K: Thank you! Its tough to pick a favorite because I like different aspects of each party, but Ill go with my son's Little Mister Mustache Bash. I really ran wild with the details of the party. It may have been a little over the top but I had an absolute blast planning it. And I was excited how all the details came together in the end. Aside from party planing element of it all, it was also my baby's first birthday and such a special day!
BB: With all the accolades given above (working full time, mother, party planning, grad school) can you tell me how you manage to juggle it all and do it so gracefully? Inquiring minds want to know?
K: Gee, I think I have everyone fooled :-) Organization has always been one one of my strengths and that's the method to my madness. Combine a whole lot of organized with a dash of driven and sprinkle of crazy and the finished product is a girl who "appears" to be gracefully juggling it all. APPEARS being the key word here ;-) I'm a real girl with real struggles with moments of frustration with my job, my kid(s), my husband, my home, like everyone else.
BB: OK, now for the good stuff-Fun Facts about Kate:
a. Favorite Color? Black and White
b. Favorite Food? Thanksgiving Dinner
c. Favorite Moment(s)? So cliche but my wedding day and the day my son was born-both were unforgettable and very, very dear memories.
d. Funniest Memory? Skinny dipping in middle school with my best friend in her backyard pool and getting caught by the boy from up the street...
Ha! Thanks Kate for the fun interview! For those of you looking for some fun creative party planning, decorating and cooking ideas check out Studio LIME Design promise you'll be inspired. And once her Etsy Shop is open for business you'll be the first to know! Keep soaring high mama bird!
