Back to the Boot'sics

Fancy summer accessory

"Meet My New Summer Accessory" the subject line read in an email that went out to a few friends a day after my emergency room visit.  Lot's of sirens, a handful of firemen, 8 stitches 6 needles & 3 doctors later I was sent home in one lovely blue boot.  The boot, currently moonlights for a shoe and will remain so for the next two weeks.  Now, before I continue make no mistake, that this is my first boot for summer.  If truth be told, this is my second boot.  My first boot was bulky and had a little button that I could pump up like Jordans from years past.  My 2013 boot is an upgrade.  Like most upgrades this one is sleeker & smaller.  My right foot became acquainted with my first boot in 2007.  It was a Cinco de Mayo incident (allow me to translate: I knocked my foot against a chair after a long night celebrating the fifth of May.)  It took a full day before realizing the foot was broken. After falling in yoga and unable to smoothly roll along in my roller skates (see below) I knew something was awry.  But, my refusal of wearing heels to work confirmed any suspicion.  And like Cinderella having a glass slipper placed on her foot the doctor slid on my 2007 boot.  A few pumps later and I was good to go.

2007 Me on the Right Roller Skating with an Unknown Broken Foot

What went down in 2013:

It was a Monday evening and Bebe Bird and I were heading home from a long day at the park (nice life, right?).  I picked up a few groceries and hooked the plastic (gasp) bags to the back of my stroller. The stroller was toting a sand pale & summer toys.  I was hustling since it was dinner time followed by bed time which, by the end of the day, is my favorite time of day.  When I got to a small intersection during rush hour I was busy watching the cars when crossing the street so they wouldn't run us over & stepped on a broken glass beer bottle cutting the top of my foot a few inches wide and deep. That's New York living for ya.  I sit on a nearby bench parking Bebe Birds stroller so it is facing away from me and facing the street.

People Rally:
A car pulls over to help.  Giving Bebe Bird a book to read while helping me hold my foot up in the air until the ambulance arrives.

The car above drives my groceries and summer toys to my home placing them on our stoop when...

The Fireman arrive.  A few check out my injury.  They clean & wrap up the laceration.  Others went to Bebe Bird.  And Bebe Bird thought the fire department was there just for him.  He loved it.  They shook his hand, gave him high fives and asked him lots of questions.

Papa bird arrives at the hospital before us & takes Bebe Bird home for dinner and bath.

One of my closest friends meets Papa Bird at home.  He hands Bebe Bird over and my friend handles the meal and bedtime.  God bless that chick.

Papa Bird heads back to the hospital to hold my hand.

Z Birds mama was ready to join me on this little hospital excursion revealing that one of her first thoughts was: "I wonder if the ER allows us to have wine and cheese?"

The head of the hospital's podiatry department comes from home.  She stitches me up and sends me on my way.

And all the while life goes on.

And even saved a turtle:

but my favorite part of the week was witnessing Bebe Bird reenact the incident. He was playing the hero fireman at home.  The cat was as proud as I was.

We Travel In Packs

Bebe Bird & his side kick Z have been paling around Brooklyn ever since their fateful meeting at the peditricans office two and a half years ago.  Bebe Bird was only 12 days old.  Since then, Bebe Bird & Z see each other multiple times a week....or even a day depending on their mood and timing.  They celebrate birthdays, new years & school years together.  There is an ease and comfort in their interactions that others notice.  And, there is always laughter (along with teeny tifts) that fill the air & accompanies their play dates.  They are, in every sense, best friends.  To kick off the carefree days of summer Bebe Bird & Z (along with their parents-and a lil' sis) ventured forth to Saugaureties, NY, to crash for the weekend in a charming 1850's farmhouse.  We breathed the fresh air and soaked in some country living.  The children played in the open yard with rolling stream & swung on the tree swing.  There were cocktails, headaches, & snakes-oh my!

So, once upon a time for 3 days, 2 families & 1 get away later we enjoyed...

From One Mama to Another: Meet Dee Dee

Dee Dee & her family (from left: Gilmar Gomes, Joel & Naima)

Friends, this is Dee Dee Gomes creator of Dee Dee's Street Boutique-a sustainable fashion line filled with rompers & two pieces starting at $50.  Dee Dee is a fashion designer with remarkable taste and mother of two-Joel, 9 years & Naima, 5 years.  Her husband, Brazilian Gilmar Gomes, is a percussionist currently touring with Enrique Iglesias. If there is only one thing you need to know about Dee Dee it's that she is cool.  You know,  the kind of cool that makes you do a double take in the coffee shop whenever she walks in.  Dee Dee is pulled together in a chic without being pretentious sort of way with a fashion sense that has a reputation all it's own.  It's common to hear her look be referred to as "The Dee Dee Style" with her harem pants and free flowing tops.

Why we love her:
  • She's spontaneous and brave. She met her husband at a salsa concert while he was touring in Germany and they were engaged 3 days later.  Now, 2 kids and 12 years of marriage they are still happily together living in Brooklyn, NY.
  • She's well traveled. She grew up in Germany, lived in Brazil with her husband and moved to Brooklyn.
  • She's full of talent-designing her own sustainable clothing line (Dee Dee's Street Boutique), she was in a band and became a professional dancer at the age of 17 years old.
Dee Dee paging through her look book from Dee Dee's Street Boutique

Where it all began:
Sewing I learned in school.  I grew up in a German suburb and I wanted to dress differently but couldn't find anything that different.  So, I started making my own clothes trying to express myself & my style.  Then, I was in a dance company in Germany & we needed costumes to wear on stage so I started making something for us. Other bands or artists saw us and asked 'Hey, can you do something for us?'  And so it began.

What about your collection:
I started selling my clothing line 2 months ago.  The clothing I create is upcycled.  I get my pieces from fabric stores when they are throwing scraps away or other pieces I find-like vintage tees etc.

The perks of  having your own studio space:
Well, I'm a stay at home mom & I got this space from a friend.  You see, we swap.  I take care of her son since she is in architecture school and I can use the space to design.  When I had everything in my house it was chaos.  All the fabric and scraps were all over the place and I'd have to clean up.  With the studio space I can just leave everything and nobody cares. I can go and come back the next morning and easily pick up where I left off.

On love:
My husband is Brazilian and a percussionist. He was touring in Germany and we were engaged 3 days later and have been married for 12 years now.

Was it love at first sight? I ask.
"It was... especially from him.  He knew that's what he wanted and I was like-'How could you be so sure.  You see me once and that's it?'  So, I was very open.  Because, if he feels like that, than there must be something there. 4 months later I packed my stuff up and moved to Brazil.  I didn't speak Portuguese and he didn't speak German.  Now, we both speak English.  He understands a lot of German and can put words together but it doesn't make any sense-it's just funny and our kids speak all three languages (English, Portuguese & German)

Cross Cultural Parenting:
Because we are different cultures we did a mixture of our own. I had more of the Latin style.  I wasn't crazy about schedules and getting my baby to sleep.  You sleep whenever you're tired. I'm a "Do whatever you feel" kind of parent.

Also, my husband is on tour a lot.  I understand what he's doing. I had that life when I was dancing and in a band.  You really have to trust each other.  Sometimes he's on tour for 2 months and he doesn't see his kids or me and I know it's hard.  At a certain point you just want to be with your family.  It's important to have the family spend time together but it should come automatically. We just go with the flow and don't try to pressure it because then it's not natural and its not fun. When it does happen naturally it's so much more fun for everybody.

On raising kids in Brooklyn:
We love it!  At one point we moved back to Germany and we liked it but it was hard to live anywhere else after living in New York.  I can't even say why.  I can see myself one day living in Brazil having a bed and breakfast where tourists come but right now, New York is it.  I love Park Slope.  It feels safe here & we have so many friends here.

Naima & Joel
On Luck:
When we first moved to New York it was so expensive and eventually all my savings was gone.  Even a piece of cheese was too expensive. I became a server, which I had never done before. It was hard.  And we didn't know anybody.  We thought we should pack our stuff up and move back to Brazil or Germany.  Then, on a Sunday, we made the decision to buy our tickets to fly home the following day.  That evening Gilmar went to a jam session at the Bitter End.  We had just spent the last of our money to buy him a drum.  He said to me "I need this drum. I can't just go there with some shakers. I really want to show what I can do." Anyway,  he went to the jam session and the musical director for Enrique Iglesias was there and wanted to meet Gilmar afterward. At first we didn't believe he was the musical director but then he called the next day and wanted to have Gilmar play for Enrique and he got the job.  That's how we got to stay.

Fun Fact:
Dee Dee was once a part of a girl band called "The Funky Diamonds"  that sold a gold record in Japan.

To learn more about Dee Dee's Street Boutique become a fan on Facebook and be sure to check her out at The Real Designers Market in Soho.  "I don't really plan anything.  I just create what I feel like.  The material inspires me to always create something new and different.  That's why my pieces are all one of a kind.  It is possible that you come see my stuff in 2 months and the style is totally different.  I like to keep it flowing, never stop.  I'm always on the move.  I love it!"  And we love it too! Do your thing girl, Bebe Birds loves ya!

We Used to Hang Out on Rooftops

Me & My Twin Many Moons Ago In Matching Outfits( unplanned-again)...

We used to hang out on Brooklyn rooftops drinking a Corona watching the sunset...or rise in some cases.  We had sleep overs often and would show up in the same outfit without planning. We finish each others sentences or call one another while the voice on the other line says "I was just about to call you."  We are twins.  No, not real twins but twins non the less.  We know each other well and can gage how the other is feeling without using words.  And no matter how much time has passed we always pick up where we left off.

Now, 7 years later we still run around the city together...this time with strollers in tow and diaper bags in tact instead of our Marc Jacobs purse. We hang out on rooftops but this time in kiddy pools.

Fathers & Sons

We laugh often and are distracted plenty.  We don't see each other enough but our bond and friendship is still deeply rooted within the confines of "sisterhood".

Two lil' Birds Sporting Matching Gap Kids Jammies

This weekend, my twin came back to BK.  She was on an "east coast tour" with her 7 1/2 month old son. Three years ago she moved to Denver to seek adventure and inhale some fresh air.   She is on the move again to northern California to conquer the west.  Her visit back to NYC happened to coincide with our first borns first meeting.  It was brilliant, loving and exhausting.  NYC was hot...and I mean city hot!  Getting around in Manhattan with strollers in this kind of weather can be challenging to say the least. Yet, it gave us the opportunity to  witness the goodness of people first hand. It was incredible.  There were teenagers, grown men and women all readily available to offer a hand & carry our set of wheels (a la strollers) up and down the subway stairs (sometimes twice).  Years ago we roamed the city without agenda. Now, we are on bebe time.  Instead of dinners at 8pm we bid aideu before 8pm so we can get the kids to sleep & some shut eye ourselves.

2 Mamas & Their Boys on a Brooklyn Rooftop-(Impossible to get them both to look...sigh)

As she prepares for her trip back to Denver & another life journey I look forward to our boys meeting again on the west coast this coming winter  And feel incredibly grateful to walk the walk of motherhood with her, my twin, beside me.
