Governors Island

After 10 years of living amongst the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps we’ve discovered a peaceful little oasis tucked in the harbor between Manhattan & Brooklyn.  Governor’s Island, a former military base turned park where open fields and tree lined blocks sprinkled with empty colonial like homes reign free. You’ll discover old fortresses for the curious of mind, lush grass for the weary, large sculptures to climb, and a play area sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Arts that will have your tiny ones imagination running rampant!

You’ll see people on bikes (their own or rentals), having picnics, riding kayaks, and listening to live music.  There are food trucks for the hungry and a beer garden for the thirsty.  Although, friends had sung its praises from their city rooftops for some time I had yet to visit.  Our favorite part wasn’t the free ferry we caught at Pier 6 (that’s right free-fugetta ‘bout it) but looking over the sculptures and past the open fields to one of my favorite skylines in the world knowing that just outside of this peaceful little island, is another island no more than 800 yards away, where the hustle is still hustling and the bustle is still bustling! That thought alone is capable of  making you fall in love with New York all over again.
